Almost exactly a year ago, I reflected on the ease with which some consumers will spend thousands on a designer purse, but balk when offered an artwork for a similar price.
My initial thoughts are in this post, “Your Gucci purse is not art”.
Well, I’m back with more thoughts on the Gucci question, that is, “why do so many women find it easier/better/more desirable to spend their money on a Gucci purse over a painting?”
I think what I didn’t touch on in that post is how I think Gucci purses are a feminist issue. I want to make it clear that I don’t blame or judge a woman who chooses the purse over a painting— as long as the purse purchase is arrived at with knowledge of/access to the alternative(s).
Maybe this is a little hippie feminist of me, but I think we’re very good at distracting women, wasting their time with fads, diet culture, makeup, beauty standards and other nonsense that wastes their time, and I think the obsession with brands falls into that category.
